Atmore, AL (Newsradio 92.3) -- A 46-year-old man was arrested in Atmore following a standoff with police after he shot at officers and held his girlfriend hostage on Monday. Officials identified the suspect as Francis Blount.
Atmore Police PIO Darrell McMann said officers were called to a home on Brown Street last night....
"Officers resonded to a domestic violence incident... when officers showed up the suspect came out on the porch and fired off nine or ten rounds." McMann says at that point the officer dived for cover, and police did not return fire. "From that point he barricaded himself in the house... he had his girlfriend in there as...basically a hostage."
Hostage negotiators were able to convince Blount to release the woman shortly after 9 pm, but he remained barricaded in the home for several hours after. Blount ended up surrendering after the Baldwin County SWAT team used tear gas in the home.
Blount is now facing several charges including attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and third-degree domestic violence harassment. He was taken to the Escambia Alabama jail.
