The District 1 Medical Examiner says a software outage that affected birth and death certificates across the state was a "low key disaster" for her office this year. Dr. Diana Oleske tells Newsradio that they had to resort to hand writing death certificates and sending them via fax -- but even then the certificates would still have to be updated in Florida's vital records data system. The system went down in May and caused a statewide backlog and Oleske says they are still trying to get caught up. The state vital records system was down for three and a half months -- reportedly due to a cyber attack on the Florida Department of Health.
