Santa Rosa County, FL (Newsradio Pensacola) -- Last week the Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners shot down an ordinance that would have taken a stance on illegal immigration -- it was put forward by James Calkins who claimed Sheriff Bob Johnson supported the proposal.... but that was disputed by Commissioner Colten Wright who said the sheriff told him it was a "hair-brained idea" and that they didn't enforce federal immigration law. Newsradio asked Sheriff Johnson about it, he told us that Commissioner Calkins did reach out to him...
"He told me about this thing that he came up with... and I said number one... we do not enforce federal immigration laws like that," Johnson says he did tell Calkins that he supports a closed border and legal immigration.
Johnson says that's the only conversation he had with Calkins, and says he never told him he supported the idea.
Calkins proposed the ordinance which would say that illegal immigrants were not welcome in Santa Rosa County. It led to a large turnout of residents who spoke against the proposed ordinance and verbal confrontations between Calkins and other commissioners who accused him of using the issue to put them in a difficult position.
