FPL Planning to Ask Public Service Commission for Base-Rate Increase

Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Utility bills may be going up for FPL customers. According to the News Service of Florida, Florida Power and Light will be looking for an increase on their base electric rates that would take effect as soon as 2026. They plan to file a detailed proposal for the $1.55 billion dollar rate hike with the Public Service Commission in February. In a letter to the PSC the utility said the increase is needed because they have had substantial customer growth and need to improve their infrastructure. They also plan to seek additional rate hikes to pay for solar energy and battery projects. FPL's current base-rate plan expires at the end of 2025. The PSC recently approved a 184-million dollar base-rate increase for Tampa Electric, and a settlement that will increase Duke Energy's base rates by around $203-million. FPL says they plan to seek a midpoint increase of 11.9 percent.
