NEW ARENA TO BEAR NAME OF GULF BREEZE WRESTLING LEGEND -- David Wayne
If you were a fan of professional wrestling during the "territory days" you've probably heard of "Bullet" Bob Armstrong, a Gulf Breeze native who's left a lasting legacy in his industry -- which is still felt to this day. So much so, that a Gulf Coast professional wrestling company is naming their new venue after him...
"Down in Mobile where the Armstrong legacy is strong, just like in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze... we're opening the 'Bullet' Bob Armstrong Memorial Arena," says Diamond Championship Wrestling owner Brent Ladnier.
Ladnier says this new arena will be home for their 'DCW Synergy' TV tapings and other events as well. They're holding a ribbon-cutting event later this month to unveil the venue.
"Bullet" Bob Armstrong was a well-known wrestler during the 70s and 80s, a boom period for the industry. He called Gulf Breeze home and worked the Gulf Coast territory in Southeastern Championship Wrestling and Continental Championship wrestling, which was aired on local television stations at the time. Armstrong battled wrestling legends such as Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, Terry Funk, and Pensacola resident Michael 'PS' Hayes. "The history is unlimited," Ladnier tells Newsradio 92.3 when discussing the Armstrong family's effect on professional wrestling along the Gulf Coast.
Bob Armstrong died in 2020, but the Armstrong family is still involved in professional wrestling, both along the Gulf Coast and nationwide. Scott Armstrong is heavily involved with DCW in Mobile, and Brian "Road Dogg" Armstrong still works for World Wrestling Entertainment.
Diamond Championship Wrestling runs a weekly TV show on WKRG television called 'DCW Synergy.'
